Smartness was a Facepunch feature prior to the launch of Facepunch 2009. It was intended to force users to spell words properly and use correct grammar. It took the form of a modified post count, which not only counted the number of posts a user had made, but also checked their posts against a list of common misspellings and subtracted a certain number from the count for each word it found.

Misspellings in posts were also underlined, made bold and coloured red, and a number in the corner of the post indicated how much smartness the user had lost for that post.

The removal of smartness in Facepunch 2009 was widely criticised, but garry has not indicated that it will ever return. A poll in 2010 found that 85% of users still supported the system's revival.
